Writing a Resume That Is Effective

An impressive resume is the key to receiving interview offers. Many job seekers have an idea of the basic information that should be on a resume, but they don't know how to market themselves on paper. A solid resume should give the basic information, but it should not stop there. A hiring manager should be able to pick up a resume, scan it for ten seconds, and be convinced that the applicant is a perfect fit for the job. There are six tips to keep in mind if you are writing a resume.

1. Have a clear objective in your mind when you are writing a resume. If you are seeking a job as an engineer, focus on your experiences that would be helpful in an engineering position. Employers want well-rounded individuals, but it is important to showcase the skills that relate directly to the position.

2. Describe accomplishments rather than job descriptions or responsibilities. Typically, employers can guess what your previous responsibilities were based on-the-job titles, but they won't assume that you went above and beyond unless you tell them. Quantify your accomplishments, if possible. For instance, if you increased efficiency or saved your company money, give percentages and dollars.

3. Choose an appropriate format and font when writing a resume. Unless you are applying to a creative position, such as a graphic designer, you should use a simple and conservative format. Do not include pictures or graphics, and use standard margins. Standard margins are 1 inch on the top of the page and on the sides and between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch on the bottom. The size of the font is very important because you want the hiring manager to be able to scan your resume without squinting. The font should be either Times New Roman or Arial, and should be between 10 and 12 size font. You can use up to size 14 fonts for headings. Most importantly, keep the font style and sizes consistent.

4. Use effective keywords when writing a resume. Many companies use computers to scan resumes for keywords before they ever even reach a person's eyes, let alone the hiring managers' eyes. Therefore, it is important to read the job description and requirements carefully before writing a resume tailored to that position. If the job description describes a preference for applicants with certain skills or certifications, make sure that you mention those skills or certifications at least once in the application. It is a good idea to include a skills or core competencies section when writing a resume.

5. Don't waste valuable space on your resume. A common error is to put reference information on your resume. It is outdated, and it is assumed that if you want the job, you are willing to provide references. There is no need to put a statement that references are available at request, and do not under any circumstance waste space by putting your references' contact information on your resume. You can provide a separate reference list with that information, if desired or requested.

6. Don't stretch the truth or lie. There is nothing worse in an interview than being called out on a lie. If you claim to have a degree or certification that you don't have, don't be surprised when the hiring manager requests proof. Also, make sure that the accomplishments that you listed for each previous job can be verified if the hiring manager calls your previous employer.

Sample Resume Objectives: Good, But Summaries Are Smokin’!

Since college I've been told that a resume ought to have an "objective statement" at the top. Maybe you've been told the same.

I'm here to tell you somebody's been lying to you!

Well, not necessarily, but maybe. Every resume has an objective, but not every resume has to have an objective statement. So before you get the urge to search online for sample resume objectives, keep reading.

Every resume has an objective. How you TALK about that objective in the resume is a different matter entirely.

An objective statement simply states your objective. I got a four-year degree so I could make brilliant statements like that. But it's true, and most of the sample resume objectives you'll find online are statements of what the job seeker wants.

That's a mistake. A bad mistake.

A good resume objective statement should tell the reader what the candidate will do for him. Specifically, it ought to tell him what profit the candidate will add.

No, I'm not kidding. Here's an example of what I mean:

"A highly experienced sales and marketing professional with comprehensive strategic planning and implementation skills, and $27 million in total profit improvement added in 8 years, seeking a position as a Sales Manager where these skills will add similar or greater value."

Wow! That objective statement screams, "Keep reading!" Do YOU know any hiring manager or executive who would turn his nose up at $27 million in 8 years? I don't. It's at least worth talking to you about, which means you'll get an interview. What if it was only $1 million, or $100,000? Whatever the number, it's money, and that counts.

And that, folks, is the magic. Everything in the job search process should have a focused purpose, and be done on purpose. The purpose of your resume and cover letter is to compel an interview. A strong objective statement like that can help.

Feel free to start with a sample or three. Just be sure to modify any sample you use. Keep the good and scrap the bad.

But is that the best you can do? Hardly.

I have nothing against objective statements, and you can find some solid sample resume objectives online. My only gripe is that using a solid objective statement is settling for good when there's a (typically) better alternative.

That alternative is the resume summary. Some might call it a "Profile," or a "Summary of Qualifications," or even just "Qualifications." Whatever the name, it's a grab-'em-by-the-throat killer. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

"Savvy, results-oriented leader with proven success in managing multimillion-dollar software product rollouts to disparate sales channels. Background includes launching a high-productivity expert development team, increasing revenue by $2.5 million and achieving unit profitability within nine months (six months ahead of plan), at Widgets, Inc., with leading technology and feature-rich product releases to meet known demand. Critical thinker and adept negotiator who can apply extensive industry knowledge to profitable vendor partnerships and revenue-enhancing co-branding opportunities. Expertly directs development, technology integration, and customer demand discovery. Published author, and frequent keynote speaker at industry conferences."

Good grief! If the example resume objective a few paragraphs ago was solid, that summary will leave a reader gasping for air.

Put a summary like that in a resume (with your own qualifications in it, of course), and you'll almost certainly get a phone call for a job interview.

I can hear you saying that whoever has the summary you just read can walk on water. What about lowly old you? Here's what I used on my last resume, and I wasn't a high-powered executive either:

"Results-oreinted software developer and consulting project manager with six years' experience at Big 5 firm. Experienced OO developer with particular expertise in Java and Extreme Programming (XP). Over seven years' experience developing software and managing projects in challenging, fast-paced consulting environments. Demonstrated ability to acquire technical knowledge and skills rapidly. Innovative problem solver, able to see the business and technical sides of a problem. Proven leadership, negotiation and problem resolution abilities. Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written. Published author and conference speaker."

See? That summary needs some improvement, but it shows mere mortals can do it too. That means you can.

A powerfully stated objective statement makes your resume pop. A powerfully stated summary makes it a thermonuclear explosion. Most others in the resume pile (and there's always a pile) have objectives that translate into "get a job." Then you come along with a Sherman tank summary. They're dead meat.

Make no mistake, job search is war. Powerful summaries give you an advantage.

The 5 Worst Mistakes You Can Make When Writing Your Resume and How to Avoid Them

Let's face it, nobody is perfect. All job-hunters have something they don't want the interviewer to ask. This could be something about your past or a lack of experience in a critical area.

Listed below are the 5 most common problems that job-hunters face and some tips on how to minimize their impact.

1 - Too Young - Emphasize experience and accomplishments. Personal traits via words like fast learner, aggressive, drive, eager to learn and take on new challenges and responsibilities, etc. should be used and stressed.

Unless you are a recent college grad, leave off such things as college projects when it comes to listing specific experience.

2 - Too Old - Old is a relative term. Some people think anyone over 40 is too old whereas a Billion Dollar Fortune 500 company looking for a CEO might think a 40 year old is too young.

If you are concerned about your age, you may want to leave off certain dates such as college graduation, discharge form the military, etc. and any other dates where the hiring manager can "do the math" and "back into" knowing how old you are.

If you have a 40-year career with 10 companies, it is not necessary to go back to and list your first job.

Just leave it off your resume and when you are called in for an interview and questioned about jobs not listed on your resume, just reply that you were concentrating on your most recent and relevant experience.

3 - Not Enough Experience - Try to find some previous life experience that you've gotten and apply it the job you are seeking. A functional resume would help you stress this experience versus a chronological resume.

4 - Job Hoppers - Although not as much of an issue as it used to be, people who do change jobs often still need to understand that hiring managers still will want to know why you have moved around so much.

One of the ways to minimize how often you've changed jobs is to use a functional resume. Use only years when listing dates of employment, leave off companies that you worked for less than 6-9 months.

I personally consider these types of jobs more consulting assignments.

5 - Currently Unemployed - Again, the stigma of being unemployed is not what it used to be. The only thing that would show up on your resume that would even indicate that you were unemployed is the dates you show on your last job.

In other words, if you wrote ABC Company 1/94 - 12/04 and it is June 2005. The hiring manager will obviously want to know what is going on.

In this situation, you can and should do a few things. First as already indicated, do not list the months employed when providing dates of employment.

This will help if and when you have a lapse from Company A where you worked from 1/94 - 6/98 and Company B where you started 11/98 - Present.

Simply by eliminating the months your resume shows Company A - 1994 - 1998 and Company B 1998 - Present.

When you know you may be out of work for an extended period, I would start your own consulting business and list that on your resume. Your consulting business could read something like Jones Consulting, 2004-Present.

Whether you are doing non-profit consulting while you are looking for full time employment or are working on your own special project like writing a book, having a consulting business will help show the continuity of continued employment.

If you go the consulting route, you may want to print up business cards and stationary as well as change your telephone answering machine message to reflect the fact that you have a legitimate consulting practice.

Just remember that spending some time preparing your resume up-front will minimize and sometimes eliminate the need to explain your special situation.

How to Assess a Resume Preparation Service

With the economy tanking and U.S. unemployment rising at almost unprecedented rates, resume writing services are popping up all over, trying to cash in on what looks like a great opportunity to make a few bucks. There's nothing wrong with entrepreneurial individuals knowing where their niche market it and going after it as they provide a solution to the needs at hand.

However, what we are really seeing is not a new group of talented individuals trying to fill a need in a niche market. We are seeing an influx of individuals who, for the most part, have no talent other than finding a way to make some quick money to pay their own bills.

Do you really need to pay to have your resume done? Frankly, in an economy like this, every job hunter out there needs an edge. They need as much professional help as they can afford to beat the competition. Much like an actor needs a good agent to land the coveted roles, a job seeker needs a great marketing tool - a resume - to land the coveted jobs.

Here are some easy tips on how to find the real experts out there and stay clear of anyone who can't provide you with the talent, expertise and experience you need to help you shine in an economy such as this.

· Do they have a website? Frequently the ones who advertise on boards such as Craigslist or Backpage, etc., don't have a site to be referred to.

· If they have a website, is it professionally done? Is there contact information, pricing, and a year they started in business?

· What are the qualifications of the person / service? Don't jump just because someone says they were an HR Manager, head hunter, or recruiter. Believe it or not, these people are not trained in the science of resume writing! Sure, they can spot a good resume, but they can probably spot a good book, too. Reading a good book doesn't mean they can write a good book. Same with a resume.

· What are the qualifications you should look for? The best qualified individuals are actually certified by the National Resume Writers Association. Certification entails a very lengthy study course and an equally lengthy and detailed testing procedure. Think SATs. It's costly, too. This is not some run of the mill association that just anyone can sign up for. Look for the NRWA blue logo on any site that claims to have extensive experience.

· What are they charging? This is an excellent example of "you get what you pay for". A great resume can easily reach the $500 range. Is it worth it? That's up to you! But when you are assessing what you get for your money, keep in mind that a real resume preparation service spends a considerable amount of time working with you one-on-one. It's much more detailed than submitting a current resume, filling out a form, selecting PayPal at checkout, and waiting a day or so for a completed resume. A professional, experienced service puts someone in charge of your account, understands your past, your goals, and knows how to translate all that into a language that will be targeted directly at the companies you are interested in working for.

What happens with a lower priced resume service? You get less of the personal attention, if you get any at all. Chances are you do everything online and have no idea who is doing your resume or what the resulting product will look like. They work with your present resume, make some changes, do some spell checking and editing, and in many instances your new resume doesn't look all that different from the one you had before. If you're looking in the under $100 price range, this is about what you can reasonably expect.

· What about guarantees? In all honesty, it's difficult to "guarantee" a resume simply because people will always blame the resume service if they are having trouble finding a job. A guarantee in this particular industry doesn't mean they guarantee you any type of job success. It usually means you'll be happy with the end product, and some even promise in writing that you will get at least phone calls and interviews. A good guarantee simply means that you should at least end up with a quality document that effectively portrays your experience, abilities and career goals.

Video Resumes: The Next Trend???

A newspaper reporter interviewed me for a story about vieo resumes. Sparked by a recent incident of a trainee for a Wall Street job, Aleksey Vayner, who sent a video resume called “Impossible is Nothing” that resulted in howls of laughter, ridicule, condemnation and a prominent position on YouTube .

According to Wikipedia, “Aleksey Vayner is a Yale student who became known after sending an 11 page resumé accompanied with a video in which he discusses his philosophy on success and shows off his physical prowess to various Wall Street firms.

In his 11 page resumé, Vayner claims that he: runs a charitable organization, is the CEO of an investment firm and has written a book on the Holocaust, among other things. Independent research has shown many of these claims to be false. His book was at least partially plagiarized, his investment firm's website lists a non-existent address and the charitable organization is using an unauthorized Charity Navigator logo.”

Putting aside the “errors” in his resume and watching the video, it proves the point I made to the reporter:

DON'T DO IT!

Very few people perform well in front of a camera in this context; very few people work with skillful enough interviewers to make you look good. Vayner’s video, including shots of him playing tennis, skiing, lifting weights, dancing and breaking bricks with him speaking over the scenes is symptomatic of how this form fails.

Now, for some fields—acting is the obvious example that comes to mind—the idea of an audition tape is considered normal and acceptable. But for almost all other occupations, it fails—plus it exposes you to the impact of bias in the work place.

For example, for older workers who have learned to disguise age in a resume through the absence of dates and deleting early job history, the video resume exposes you to age-ism. For the foreign born job seeker, it may expose your limitations in oral communications before a company has had a chance to see your real knowledge and get a sense of your ability. For the minority job seeker, it becomes another way racism can be rationalized.

So if you get an email solicitation to do a video for your job search, or if you have a well-meaning friend suggest to you this real cool idea, RUN!
